Step 3

Stop building marks — start seeing. The observational channel.

Target switch from constructing marks (T0) to recording what the eye actually reports — the channel CAD never trained. Two skills: the eye-hand link (the hand follows the eye, not your knowledge of the object) via contour drawing, and judging proportion by eye via comparison. This is the deliberate anti-CAD-brain step: suspend the urge to construct from remembered geometry, to assign dimensions, or to draw the symbol of a thing instead of the thing. Lineage: Nicolaïdes, The Natural Way to Draw (contour — "draw with your sense of sight and touch, not your intellect") + sight-size / comparative measuring.

Exercise A · Sessions 1–2 — pen · a perceptual warm-up thereafter

Blind contour

Setup — pen, paper, ~10 min. Subject: one irregular organic object under directional light — your non-drawing hand, a leaf or twig, a shell, a crumpled piece of paper.

Procedure — pen to paper, fix your eye on a single point of the subject's edge, and never look at the paper. Move your eye slowly along the contour and move the pen in exact sync, at the same speed, as if the tip were touching that edge. One continuous line as far as possible — follow interior contours too (wrinkles, creases, nail edges), not just the outline. When a contour dead-ends you may lift and re-place the pen without looking; never peek to reposition. ~3–5 min per drawing; misregistration is expected and irrelevant. Mode: perceptual — eye ~100% on subject.

Watch & measure — did you look at the paper? (You shouldn't have.) Did the pen move only when the eye moved, at the same pace? The result looking distorted is expected and irrelevant — the eye-hand link is the point.

Exercise B · Sessions 2–3 — pen

Modified (slow) contour

Setup — pen, ~15 min. Same kind of irregular organic subject.

Procedure — as blind contour, but you may glance at the paper occasionally to reposition — eye still ~80% on the subject. Draw the edges you actually observe, slowly and deliberately, including interior contours (where the form turns, folds, or overlaps), not just the outline. One committed, continuous-ish line; commit to what you see. Mode: perceptual — eye ~80% on subject.

Watch & measure — are you drawing observed edges or remembered symbols? Did you record the subject's real irregularities and interior turns, or a generic shape?

Exercise C · Sessions 3–4 — pencil

Comparative proportion

Setup — pencil, ~15 min. A subject with clear proportions — a mug, a bottle, or the same organic object.

Procedure — pick a unit (say, the object's width). Judge everything else against it by eye: "the height is about one-and-a-half widths," "this angle is steeper than the last." You may check with the pencil-sighting method — arm locked straight, hold the pencil up, thumb marks a length, compare — but no ruler and no assigned dimensions. Block in the big relationships as light marks first, then commit. Mode: perceptual — compare, don't measure numerically.

Watch & measure — hold the drawing beside the subject: do the major proportions match (height-to-width, placement of features)? If it reads wrong, suspect proportion before line quality.

1. In modified contour, the drawing reads as this specific object — its real irregularities and interior turns, not a generic symbol — with the eye kept mostly on the subject.
2. Blocked-in proportions match the subject when held side by side (major height-to-width and feature placement within a reasonable margin).

Repeat if drawings still come out as remembered symbols, or proportions are guessed rather than compared. That means the perceptual channel — see, then record — isn't leading yet; the analytical habit is still driving. Do not advance on time logged.
Keep dated contour pages — early distortion is expected, and the comparison across weeks is where you'll see the eye sharpen. Blind contour becomes a good perceptual warm-up. You can now begin the memory-drawing loop: study a subject, put it away, draw it from memory — it exposes what you actually observed versus assumed. Next nodes: T1 continues with gesture and negative space; T2 construction is also open (T0 marks + basic perception in place) and will fold your CAD spatial sense back in.
